From the Athens Olympics to the warzone of Basra, Lessons for Building Resilience from High Pressure Environments

I experienced 2 high pressure high stakes environments as an Olympic rower, competing at 3 Olympic Games, and as a diplomat working in some high-pressure situations, most notably as a diplomat working in Basra during the time of the conflict 10 years ago, in an environment with daily incoming mortars and rockets. My experience, backed up by the research across all these fields (military, sport, grief, trauma), focuses on 3 areas that sit at the heart of resilience:

1. Psychological flexibility
2. Self-awareness under pressure
3. Genuine, collaborative relationships
